Modern ArchitectureQ: What architectural style inspires you the most in your work?

Modern Architecture which is the term used to describe the simplified, unornamented building styles. These styles are also known as International Style, Neue Sachlichkeit or New Objectivity, and Functionalism. They developed as a reaction to the design excesses of the Victorian and the Edwardian period. A few of the Characteristics of modern architecture are:

  • lack of ornaments
  • Low Horizontal massing and  flat roofs
  • emphasis on rectangular forms and horizontal planes and broad roof
  • Use of modern materials and systems
  • Generous use of glass and natural light
  • Emphasis on open flowing interior spaces
  • Use of traditional materials in new ways
La Sagrada Familia

La Sagrada Familia

Q. What are a few architectural landmarks that take your breath away and inspire you?

La Sagrada Familia

1.La Sagrada Familia by Antoni Gaudi (he is my favorite architect)  Gaudi was a Spanish architect whose most famous work-La Sagrada Familia is in Barcelona and has been under construction  since 1882 and is not expected to be completed for between 30 to 80 years.  The architectural style of Sagrada Familia has been called “warped Gothic,” The rippling contours of the stone facade make it look as though Sagrada Familia is melting in the sun, while the towers are topped with brightly-colored mosaics which look like bowls of fruit. Gaudi believed that color is life, and, knowing that he would not live to see completion of his masterpiece, left colored drawings of his vision for future architects to follow.

Rooms- new Homes

North Facing Rooms Give your Home an extra Boost of Sunshine

Q: Can you give our fans a home design tip?

Rooms that you would like to have a great deal of natural light i.e. Family Rooms, Breakfast Areas should face north. They will receive the most sunlight.

The more natural light you have in your house, the less lights you have to turn on, and the less electricity you use.  One of the best reasons to design your home for natural light involves the health benefits gained through exposure to natural light.

• Sunlight increases the level of endorphins and serotonin in your brain, which will leave you feeling much better.

• Increased exposure to sunlight can be effective against insomnia, premenstrual syndrome and seasonal affective disorder.
